The fine print
- What this compares. Your current average power bill of $233 a month against your solar payment of $159.08 a month, over 25 years. Utility escalated at 7.5% per year, solar at 2.99% per year.
- Still connected to the grid. You are still connected to the utility grid and would be expected to pay a small fixed monthly rate, considered the standard connection fee.
- Appalachian Power rates are moving. Appalachian Power's West Virginia residential rates have climbed steadily. The Sierra Club put them up about 20 percent in the three years through 2024, and the Public Service Commission approved a further 4 percent base rate adjustment that took effect June 1, 2026. As part of that settlement the company agreed not to file a new base rate case before June 2027. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
